New Delhi: United States President Donald Trump on Sunday called his former attorney Michael Cohen a "rat" while lashing out at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for raiding the latter's office, thereby causing the 52-year-old lawyer to turn against him. Taking to his Twitter handle, Trump questioned why the investigative agency did not "break into" the offices of the Democratic National Committee or former US Secretary of State and his Democrat opponent in the 2016 polls, Hillary Clinton.
"Remember, Michael Cohen only became a "Rat" after the FBI did something which was absolutely unthinkable & unheard of until the Witch Hunt was illegally started. They BROKE INTO AN ATTORNEY'S OFFICE! Why didn't they break into the DNC to get the Server, or Crooked's office?" he tweeted. In April this year, the FBI had conducted a search at Cohen's home, office, and hotel rooms and seized hundreds of documents and computer files, related to hush agreements of adult Stormy Daniels, pertaining to her alleged affair with Trump.
The raids came as a part of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into alleged Russian interference in the presidential polls. On December 12, Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison by a New York court over charges of tax evasion and campaign-finance violations. He was ordered to pay USD 1.39 million in restitution, forfeit USD 500,000 and cough up an additional USD 50,000 fine by the US District Judge William Pauley.
The judge found Trump's attorney guilty of campaign-finance violations amongst other charges while referring to the payments made during the 2016 election campaign to Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who claimed to have past affairs with the US President.
During the hearing, Cohen, who once said that he would "take a bullet" for Trump, claimed that he was living in a "personal and mental" prison since he started working for him and acknowledged that he was doing his duty to cover up the US President's "dirty deeds". Both Trump and Cohen have been in a war-of-words after the sentencing with the two trading barbs and allegations against each other.
