Washington: The Donald Trump administration is planning to set up a Space Force as the new branch of the US military by 2020.
Vice-President Mike Pence on Thursday detailed plans for the US Space Force and said that the new department will ensure America’s dominance in space at a time when there are heightened competition and threats from China and Russia, reported the Associated Press.
“Now the time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of our armed forces, to prepare for the next battlefield where America’s best and bravest will be called to deter and defeat a new generation of threats to our people, to our nation,” Pence was quoted as saying by AP.
The Space Force concept was first proposed back in 2009. US President Donald Trump brought up the idea again in June this year.
What is a Space Force?
Described by Trump as “separate but equal”, the Space Force will be a new department of the US military and the sixth service after the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force.
According to the plan the US Space Force will have three units with. The Space Command being led by a four-star general to oversee warfighting operations. New technologies will be identified and developed by the Space Development Agency. The Space Operations Force will be made up of leaders and fighters for their expertise.
