New Delhi: Affected by the ball-tampering controversy that shook Australian cricket during their third Test of the ongoing four-match Test series against South Africa, Steve Smith has stepped down as the captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals.
Smith will be replaced by India's top-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane in the 11th edition of the tournament. Zubin Bharucha, a Rajasthan official said, "The incident in Cape Town has certainly disturbed the cricketing world. We have been in constant touch with the BCCI and taken their counsel. Furthermore, we have been in regular contact with Steve.”
Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith have found themselves at the centre of ball-tampering allegations during the third Test against South Africa.
Bancroft was seen on television running his hand over the rough side of the ball while fielding in the covers, before removing a small yellow object from his pocket and placing it down the front of his trousers.
Bancroft was then spoken to by English umpires Nigel Llong and Richard Illingworth and showed them a different item from his pocket, seemingly a fabric sunglasses case.
Smith was penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC), which slapped the Australian with a one-match suspension and fined his entire match fee on Sunday.
