New Delhi: Do you have an obsession for sugary beverages like sodas, mocktails and concoctions? If so, there might be some alarming news for you! High consumption of sweet beverages is linked to development of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) over time. No matter how Instagram-worthy those sugary drinks might appear, they are damaging your health.
Over a span of 13 years (from 2000-2013), a study conducted on 3003 African-American people, who consumed sugary beverages revealed shocking details. The research examined the relationship between the intake of sugary beverages and Kidney function, through a food frequency questionnaire. Out of 3003 subjects, 185 (6%) developed CKD over a median follow up of 8 years.
The study revealed that frequent consumption of drinks with a combination of sugary fruit drinks, soda, and water is associated with a higher risk of developing CKD. Participants in the top tertile were 61% more likely to develop CKD than those in the bottom tertile. Chronic Kidney Disease has no significant symptoms in the early stages.
Noticeable symptoms like shortness of breath, change in urine output, nausea, etc develop at the later and more dangerous stages of CKD. Untreated CKD can lead to Kidney failure as well. The findings published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN) point contribute to the growing mass of evidence which suggests that consumption of ‘sugar-sweetened drinks’ has negative health consequences.
