New Delhi: Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who has been in hospital for the last nine weeks, is in critical condition as his health has deteriorated, an official statement by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said on Wednesday evening.

Since Thursday morning, LK Advani, BJP chief Amit Shah and Union ministers Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Venkaiah Naidu and several other leaders visited Vajpayee at AIIMS. According to the statement, the 93-year-old is on life support system. Vajpayee, who was the 10th prime minister of India, was admitted to the hospital on June 11 with a kidney tract infection, chest congestion and urine output on the lower side.

A statement from AIIMS Thursday morning said, "Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's condition continues to remain the same. He is critical and on life support systems".

AIIMS issued the statement hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the hospital on Wednesday evening to enquire about the condition of the former PM.

It was PM Modi's fourth visit to Vajpayee in AIIMS since he has been admitted. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, BJP lawmaker Meenakshi Lekhi and Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani had also visited AIIMS.

Vajpayee headed governments thrice, for 13 days in 1996, 13 months in 1998 and for almost six years from 1999. Vajpayee's government was the first non-Congress government to complete a full five-year term in office.

An outstanding parliamentarian and orator, poet and liberal, Vajpayee was hugely respected across party lines.
