Bihar: More than 60 children lost their lives due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar. Till now 58 patients died at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital and 11 at Kejriwal Hospital.
The disease has a history of being active in the months of April to June in Muzaffarpur which is the hub of lychee production in India. Undernourished children are more vulnerable to catch it if they visit litchi orchards in these months.
Some of the causes of AES are as under:
Virus that cause mumps, measles and German measles
West Nile Virus
Symptoms may vary from person to person. But some of the common ones are:
Dizziness, body ache, fever, vomiting, blurred vision, fatigue, loss of hearing, backspin, weakness, paralysis, among others.
One of the ways to treat AES is proper hydration and increasing the glucose levels in the body. Apart from this, keeping the surroundings clean and hygienic. Eating fruits and vegetables after washing them thoroughly can be quite helpful.
